Finals are coming up for most post-secondary students and what comes before is what we call “stress”. Yes, you cannot escape it because it’s there and you cannot over stress because you’ll blank out or black out. But.. here are 10 tips to survive this “Finals Seasons”. We’ll call it the.. “JaneyTips”
1. Paint your nails!
Painting your nails takes a lot of focus because of course, they have to be perfectly done with the perfect color. If you start stressing, heart racing and you just want to give up on studying because you’ve lost all hope and focus… Pick up a nail polish & start polishing your nails. Painting your nails will force you to calm down, catch your focus and also make you look glamorous while you write that brutal exam.

2. Drink some tea!
Tea is known to be soothing and nutritious. Make sure you pick the right tea because you do not want to knock out at the middle of studying. Start off by drowning your tea with sugar to give you that boost of energy and caffein, then sip your tea slowly, taking short breaks between sips and finally end off by drinking a cold refreshing cup of water. The tea will sooth your soul but can make you a little “too calm” which can cause drowsiness. Taking short breaks between sips will give you something to do and the cold water wakes you up after that soothing cup of relaxing tea! Remember, stay away from camomile tea or you’ll only remember waking up the next day and end up failing your exam but heyyy… let’s not think that way!

3. Snacks, snacks & more snacks!
Keep yourself from getting bored or hungry by snacking. Yes yes I know, this is where “freshman 15” comes from but no, we as girls must do what it takes to survive this crazy exam season! Snacking on popcorn, chips, or even cookies will improve your productivity. Without this, you will get the urge to get up and eat, you’ll feel too focused on your work and start to get distracted by other things. Snacking will be a balance with brutally studying and oh please girl, you know you want that oreo cookie or chips or whatever you have laying there. Grab it!

4. Take a walk.
You’re sitting typing, writing, reading, memorizing? Your body gets tired and bored because of all that so the best thing to do is to get up and go for a walk. If it’s the middle of the night, please do not go outside because you’ll be worried about other things other than passing your exam.. Walk around your house for a couple minutes just to get yourself active and I promise you, your stress will be reduced. You will get your blood flowing as well as your brain active and hey, you totally could count that as your workout of the day ;) #NoDaysOff
5. Relax girl, take a break.
I need you to all sit down and take a very short break. Drop the books, the calculator or dictionary and maybe even the bible you’re grabbing so firmly on to because you’re sure it’ll save you. Take a break, watch your favourite TV show for half an hour and just relax. A great way that I strongly suggest is to take a short bubble bath and get perfect relaxation through that. Don’t make this last long because you need to jump right back to studying.

6. Look after yourself.
You might think staying up all night and skipping meals means you are really getting some work done but to be honest girl, you’re making things worse. Sleep at least 7 hours, eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and I promise your productivity will increase, stress will decrease and you will look 10x better before your exam. Nothing better than walking into the exam hall looking like you “woke up” like that. Taking care of yourself should be a priority for you ladies. Looking your best and feeling confident during an exam can boost marks by 10%!!! Well.. maybe 5% but you get the point.

7. Stop whining, please.
Girls, our number one go-to when we’re stressed is to complain and whine. In fact, you’ll spend more time complaining and tweeting about your exam than actually studying. Stay calm and accept the situation. You’re studying for an exam, writing an exam or what ever the situation is. Just stay calm & it’ll be all over soon. Plus, no one likes a whiner.

8. Stay away from distractions.
I know I know, it’s mission impossible for you but you can do it because keeping up with the Kardashians are on. Try this, turn off your TV, electronic devices or whatever you have on you and focus for 2 hours. You’ll he surprised how much work you got done and the best part about that 2 hours of epic cramming? You have 1 hr of break and to do whatever the hell you want such as “catching up” with the Kardashians.. haha funny..

9. Study with friends.
Be careful when you do this because most of the time, group studying sessions ends up becoming group gossiping about that girl you do not like sessions so stay on topic, I’m sure gossiping can wait. What I feel will help most especially is to keep a schedule of when to socialize as well as when to get work done. I’ve realized that the best way to learn is to teach others. Trust me, I’ve spent most of my first year tutoring other 1st year kids the same material I’m learning. By teaching someone or working with someone, you’ll be able to not only share ideas but remember things better. A question could come up & you’ll remember discussing that answer with your friend or maybe that really cute boy you used studying as an excuse to talk to…. ;)

ReplyDeleteGreat list indeed, except as a nutrition student I don't agree with the copious amount of sugar in the tea! Sugar will make you hyper and focused at first, but only for a little while until you crash hard and burn! Better to skip the sugar all together and sip your tea with some brain food such as complex carbs, good protein and fat with omega 3!
